Midnight Pub

Trying to navigate the new-old web

~impulse

So, Gemini is actually really neat, there's no doubt about it. But of course, I'm not used to it, and so a couple things confuse me.

Firstly, although this is more with the pub specifically, is there any way to login to the pub with a Gemini browser? I use Lagrange, and I know it has an option for making your own "identities" (RSA keys that hold metadata), but it only seems like I can log in and post on boring old HTTP.

Secondly, what Gemini server software would you all recommend? There are quite a few options, and I'm not sure which one would fit me best.

~bartender, hand me some coffee. It's probably gonna be a long day for me, for unrelated reasons.

Glad you were able to figure out posting! As for server software, I found Agate to be the simplest for me (though my capsule is down for the moment while I rethink what I want to publish), since you just give it some files and it just works. But depending on what you want to do, something more complicated might be warranted.

Ah, so Agate is for "static" sites I suppose? I guess I can take a look, but I want to try out something that can automatically generate feeds...

Oh, that reminds me, what's the format for making feeds in gemtext? I heard that you could make feeds in gemtext files now.

The spec for feeds is published at https://gemini.circumlunar.space/docs/companion/subscription.gmi

That said, if you want to generate feeds with agate I think the directory listing feature would work, assuming you started each gemtext file name with the date.

Nice! I'll take a proper look when I get home.

Kinda realized that it was only possible via HTTP, at least right now, I'm kind of an idiot sometimes.

It's not that obvious though, and it could be supported via gemini even if currently it isn't.

reply

impulse

True, but even so, I should have realized quicker.
