How to listen to music

~2pie

Hello bartender, mind if I use the jukebox ?

-----

These days, I am thinking a lot about how I listen to music. By that I mean the technical medium I use (radio, CD, streaming, etc.), and by extension, the relation I have with the music I am listening to.

I've always been reluctant to using streaming platforms, the idea of not owning, not having control on the music is something I don't like. I often see some playlists with "holes", some tracks that are no longer available and that can no longer be listened to. I don't like that.

So in a sense, I want to "own" the music.

A different part of me wants the opposite: owning the music leads me listening to the same songs over and over. I am less inclined to discover music (through the radio for instance). I like the idea of listening to the radio, hearing a song once, appreciate the moment, and letting it go. It has a kind of mindfulness aspect to it that I love. I've experienced great pleasure listening to a song on the radio, but after I "shazam" it, or look at it online to listen to it again, I don't feel the same way, the magic is gone.

In a way it's a paradox. I want more control than what streaming services offer, but also less control, like what radio offers.

Isn't that weird ?

I often read about the Pub, but now i needed to create an Account....ohm, i mean : needed to come around and convince myself of the Pub aaand.... (looking around)

...nice Ambience , i feel good here ^^... and, by the way, Compliment to the Cleaning Raft, it is very clean here.

They do an importand & great Job, what needs to be mentioned !!!

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯

Music to me is = Power, Spirit, Drug, Harmony, LOVE, Life

...and i collected a lot of Vinyl in my Cellar, but now we trust Streaming-Apps ?

I don't want those Apps on my Smartphone. I'm sure they don't respect my Privacy.

And the Companies of the Streaming-Apps earn Money, then the Record Labels... and maybe theeeen the Artists/Musicians..!

Or the Artists go create their own Record Label ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

An interesting Webside is www.whosampled.com . The old sound is so supple (⌐⊙_⊙) , ilove it <3

yeah, my biggest issue is for me that music is something i want access to all of it, but i also don't want that access taken away. i guess i can go the route of piracy and i know that streaming services pay barely anything, but it still contriubtes i feel and so im ok with them, maybe once i have jellyfin working or something ill go that route

Good morning!

~bartender? Just coffee with cream and sugar, water on the side. Thank you!

I'm on the "I want to own the stuff" side myself. I have a cabinet full of vinyl albums and a few drawers full of CDs. I still try to replace the abandoned cassette tapes with LPs or CDs if I can find them in the second hand store. The most important effect in my not so humble opinion is this: Having a physical item in my hands renders any discussions about (not so) legal copies moot. It also solves the issue that $provider cannot delete my copy of $item from remote.

The thing about discovery of new music is not so important for me any more. Any time I inspect the drawer, I will find something I have long forgotten about. :) And I have found out, that wikipedia deep dives starting on the album on the player yields any amount of interesting connections and information and "Oh, maybe I should find one of those!" Highly recommended. Or did you know, that "The music goes round and round" helped the Decca label to get big? In 1935 or so? It's a nice little song ... go find it!

If I don't like something any more, which happens, I can always give it away. There is still this second hand shop within reach.

PS: I do agree to the "magic moment" observation. The situation in which a particular song or piece is encountered, might not be repeated again.

I used to think that music should be owned, but I've changed my mind about music streaming services.

First of all, there's so much music that I own that I don't listen to, and just because I can listen to something at any time doesn't mean I'm going to listen to it all the time. I think it's better to just let go of what I don't listen to. It's not fun to see music taking up storage that I don't even listen to.

The joy of discovering new good music on the radio is great, and it seems to me that it's enough that I can pull that newfound music out of a streaming service and listen to it when I want to.

In essence, I'm not sure it's right for music to be privately owned. Shouldn't the owners of some music be the people who made it and the people who perform it? We're just the audience, we listen, we clap if we like it, we support the artists, and we take comfort from it. :)

~bartender, can I have a Diet Coke here?
