I just recently took a new job (actually I start next week) and I'll be doing web dev work. Was an embedded developer for nearly two decades, a console user and hated just about every social media beyond the old dial up BBS I used to frequent as a child. Its such a weird feeling where my day job is working in a tech that I never really wanted to exist.

To be fair, the new job is not some garbage SaaS product no one really needs, I'll be working on the web services, client portal and mobile presence for a local hospital system. But still the god awful amount of javascript I'll be writing...

I'm not sure what you meant by weird little anime-styled websites.

We're only 15 years out from the first iPhone. Jobs has only been dead for 11 years.

We're only 15 years out from the first iPhone.

I can't believe it already has been fifteen years. More than enough time to go from "all the world's knowledge in your pocket" to "have another TikTok".

We, as a species, wasted a lot of potential.

I mean I think we already had that with the advent of Wikipedia and UMPCs or even the BlackBerry.

Yes we did!

what i meant was that there were a bunch of websites that were centered around aesthetics from anime / manga series. (here's one that's still alive! there are a few others like this: https://zyglavister.lima-city.de/)

15 years ago!!! that's insane to think about. weren't flip phones a thing back then too? or am i mixing up the timeline even more?

Hmm, that's not exactly Neocities adjacent. It's very early 2010s and bloggy like Tumblr but not quite. Are you aware of the .moe websites?

Flip phones were definitely still a thing back then. I didn't see iPhones everywhere until the 3GS. Galapagos phones as they're known in Japan have hung around in anime for a lot longer.

The reduction of everything to a concern of profit is a terrible burden for humankind.

this will not leave my brain for a long time, that's for sure.

there's got to be something better than what we have right now. there has to be.

Welcome!

things kind of suck in the greater www

Yes, they do, but fortunately there are still pockets of resistance here and there (the small web, the fediverse, rss feeds, etc).

And Gemini offers another space, a different space with a different purpose. Enjoy your stay!

thank goodness for that. honestly, surfing through the small web led me to incredible finds and resources. it's awesome what communities formed in those spaces can create.

yes!! i really like the potential that gemini offers. i'm going to do my best to settle in and explore.

I think the difference compared to the old web is you have to be terminally online to find these spaces. People are a lot more reluctant to use anything that isn't, say, Twitter. Not having verified social media is like not having a credit score.
