My attempt at solarpunk

~yretek

Barman, a local, vegan, enviro.... heck, just some nice cider from around these parts, please.

So, I'm going to talk about my book. Oh, don't scoop yourselves away, I'm not really a writer, and you won't buy my book, because I'm not selling it.

You've heard about solarpunk, right? And this famous Tomasino talking his podcast about solarpunk prompts... Well, he wants to try and get somebody to write something that would inspire people to go ahead and fight pollution, climate change and a lot of other bad stuff.

Well, I've never been into that sort of writing, but people, I am sick and fed up with pessimism in fiction and fact. These are good times for the pessimist, if you ask me. Heck if even a Startrek thingy came out dark and somber, and the re-dreamed Galactica seeme re-nightmered, with every bit darker than the original for no good reason.

So, allow me to disturb you with a little smile and a wee candle. Not that I am The One, but I can be one...

Anyway, this is what I'm just starting on Yretek

Yep, that yretek.com (see me in gopher and gemini)

I'm creating a world, Pólvar, which to a Spaniard would sound to something like "related to dust". Apparently Tierra, Earth, was already taken so, I made that word up, unusual accent and all. Well, this Pólvar world is pretty much like Earth, except its Geography and History, mostly. It all went pretty much the same: creation/evolution, humans popping up, civilization, wars, environmental collapse, more wars, societal collapse at a global scale.

Oh, that bit has not already happened on Earth. I know, I know, let me go on, alright.

But that collapse went by a long time ago, and society has rebuilt itself up to something that looks a bit like a Western, but without an East. It's mostly villages and towns, though a couple of cities are growing. Then add a bit of low fantasy, not elves, but maybe somebody heard a ghost somewhere while on the booze. Oh, and some healthy dose of Norther Exposure and brown coats of the firefly variety.

And with all that in mind, I'm doing some of all of the Solarpunk prompts, the Tomasino's and the alxd ones. Changing what I'd need to change to make them fit together and the world.

But I'm not writing a novel. Just a set of stories, and other materials that would share that milieu. So help me God.

He also did a video on YT about it.

Lastly, a question, would it be worth to give it a CC license?

Barman, would you pour us a glass of Monahan's mudder milk?

reply

johano

Oh and read the comics and novels too, which I haven't gotten around to yet...

Make that two!

I think I'm going to do a binge rewatch of the series and the movie sometime real soon now...

Other than the Elves, it sounds like you're describing the world of Revachol from the game Disco Elysium

I cannot really see that at all. But anyway, I don't think that's too important.

I like solarpunk. It gives me hope that despite everything, it might be okay in the end.

reply

yretek

Indeed, it might be dark, so let's start a fire then.
