Midnight Pub

new here/first post

~winter

I'm new here, though not to geminispace - you can find me elsewhere, under the same name.

I've also recently got back into creating websites and journalling like it's the late 90s again.

Having spent most of the last two decades in the deeply unfulfilling social-media focused online spaces, taking the defaults offered to me, I'm working on spreading myself thin: posting on social media I don't hate (right now: mastodon, cohost), writing on my website and in geminispace, making physical things and mailing them to strangers, and otherwise generally trying to improve the online experience by participating in the kinds of experiences I wish I'd had during the years of FB and Twitter and Reddit.

I'm a poet. I can write some code. But none of this is particularly important: I'm here for the people and the connections and what we can create between all of us. I'm tired of consuming. I'm tired of scrolling. What're the next twenty years going to look like? Let's f'n go.

Feels like there's a lot of us: the sensation that something's wrong and needs to be fixed; a deep unhappiness with the status quo imposed on us and meted out by our phones.

yeah absolutely. something changed very quickly in civilisational terms (is that a thing?). For me as a late-40-something part of the work is trying to work out if my desire to ditch the 'commercial web' stuff and the attention economy stuff is (a) *actually* trying to get away from that stuff, or (b) having a mid-life crisis and wishing it was the 90s again :D

Welcome to the pub, ~winter. I very much felt you on "taking the defaults offered to me". What sorts of physical things are you making?

I edit a little magazine. very DIY aesthetic. I put out a couple issues a year, just my own little contribution to the small press landscape.

I've kept a very clean delineation between my geminispace presence and my web presence due to online harassment a long time ago - my gemspace alias is a new one to prevent a particular person from finding me. I'm not comfortable linking the two identities by providing a link. Sorry, but thank you for asking <3

Aw, I wanted to see the magazine too, but totally understand. Sorry you have to deal with that. Harassing people is such a poor use of time.
