asking for advice about computers

~kavehorvanya

what are good computers? even the regular brands. i don't know much about specs and stuff (im happy to listen to someone explain), and though this forum tends to the smaller-scale indie retro aesthetic stuff it is also the most nerdy (endearing) place i know. thank you thank you thank you.

If you are looking for a laptop that can run free software from the BIOS up, I'd recommend taking a look at Thinkpenguin, Technoethical, or Minifree. They all sell refurbished Lenovo Thinkpads (T series and X series) that come pre-installed with a free BIOS (Libreboot/Coreboot) and a libre GNU/Linux distribution. Happy hacking!

It really depends on what you want to do with your computer. I can't help you with PCs for gaming because I do most of my gaming on a console, but if you're just looking for something that will let you mess around on the web, do email, code, make art/music you might not need a brand-new or high-end machine.

For example, I'm posting from a Thinkpad T60 that I bought used for $50 and upgraded. That might be too old and busted for you, but a more recent T-series Thinkpad refurb might be just what you need.
