Cubicle Hell

~softwarepagan

I've been working in a giant concrete building full of cubicles since August. It feels like I've been here for fifteen years.

Literally, virtually everything I can see is beige. The fluorescent lighting is somehow too bright and too dim. I am very close to literally going crazy. I am about to smash something.

This environment is unbelievably corrosive to my mental health. I feel I have lost years of progress in three months. I feel as if I must focus just to remain alive.

Why do we design office space like this?

They design them with profit in mind. If you are uncomfortable you will work more. If you are cold you will work faster. If you are depressed you'll talk less with coworkers. If there's nothing to look at there's nothing to be distracted by.

Can you decorate your cubicle? Maybe you can try to find a bit of whimsy in-spite of the corporate lameness of it all.

After all that's all we can do. Just remember they want you to be uncomfortable. They want you to become a depressed workaholic because they want to break you in.

Also maybe blue light blocking glasses could help with the florescent lights?

I think decorating my cubicle and bringing in some lamps is the answer.
