update time!

Howdy, all!

~bartender? Some good filter coffee with cream and sugar, ah, take a big mug, it needs to last a bit. Thanks! --- Ah, and one of your ethernet cables, please! No, wireless is kind of never working when I need it most. :-)

/me heads over to the table in the dark corner near the power outlet and the hidden ethernet jack. I fetch my small notebook and the key dongle from my backpack and set those up on the table.

~bartender serves my coffee and inquires: Why oh why?

Debian 12.8 is out! Hot off the press, so to speak. I found out just before coming in! :-) And now, I'm going to remote update all my stuff running Debian. Nah, I'm not expecting exciting puzzles along the way, but who knows ...

/me takes a sip of coffee, nods over to ~inquiry and the other patrons chatting away, and logs in.

update: :)

An hour or so, and a refill later, and 8 systems are up to date! Success!

A long time ago, when cardboard boxes with Linux distributions in them were still a thing, I said "Debian unstable is more stable than the stuff in those boxes, in my humble opinion." Unstable has failed on me maybe 2 or 3 times in >20 years. And I could always fix it without reinstalling. Ok, ok, I'm being guilty of adding boring tech stuff to gemini. AGAIN!

Cheers!

debian was

my daily driver

for a looong time

recently i got on

the nixos train

but when

i got this new laptop

the nixos installer

didn't want to cooperate

which led me to

installing mx linux

great debian based distro

so basically back to deb

in a roundabout way

although

i still dig nix

so eventually

i'll be installing

the nix package on mx

it really is a great way

to manage and install packages

take a look if you haven't ;)

Hello ~wolfinthewoods,

I did come across nix, I find the concept intriguing, however I ended up with >50000 additional files under /nix in no time (1 hour maybe :) and since I'm striving for small systems (really hard these days), that kind of didn't cut it for me.

A system without perl and python and php and ruby and nodejs ... can be installed. I succeeded with alpinelinux. But then, how useful is this for me as a daily driver? Hmmmm. I can do quite a bit. But perl comes back with my own scripting, python comes back in with borgbackup, and emacs needs a bit of space to accomodate my 2 dozen extra packages ... and then I'm back to a not so small system again. AGAIN! Ah, and I use Gimp, KiCAD, LaTex once in a lengthy while, but that takes quite a toll.

~bartender? You have some herbal tea to convince my brain that it is not really needed to do another round of "small"? Sigh. No? Hmmm. Maybe some hot chocolate with spices. It's this time of the year again. It's well past noon and the fog has not lifted ...

Cheers!

that footprint

mostly

because i was using nixos

haven't gotten around

to installing it

on mx yet

that kind of gives me pause

before installing mx

i was toying around with

tiny core

which comes in at ~55mb i believe

couldn't figure out

how to make it usb bootable though

Not that you hurt your neck! However, tell me, what's to see that direction?

reply

inquiry

Less. :-)

More specifically, bottles neatly arranged before a stenciled mirror. I occasionally see the reflection of someone passing hurriedly behind me, usually rolling eyes while pointing my direction, I imagine for benefit of others that I can't see. (Likely incorrect, but inner lack of trust shouts otherwise.)

I'm trying to pace Ketel One martinis (straight up), but my love of the brand, and the glorious green olives they use here mock moderation attempts.
