If I buy you a drink, will you tell me how many mainframes it took to close the transaction?
You see me in the corner of the pub in the early morning, Long hair, looking ragged from sleep deprivation, glasses slightly crooked. You think I'm the local boozer that the barkeep feels sorry for. So you come over and ask why I have such a long face.
My reply: A lot goes into keeping the world running.

I'm hoping your post leads me to sweet JCL-writin' dreams tonight!
I'm no analyst. But I have learned quite a bit, and can now read JCL, sysprint, and sysouts well enough to accurately debug for the analysts.
Only been in this job fro a year or so so I feel quite accomplished, coming from the Linux world z/OS is a whole different beast that has been fun to learn.
$avrs is a lifesaver hahaha.
Good Morning!
Uh, I'm not the first? Hmmm. ~bartender? How about coffee and something real for breakfast? Like, uh, porridge? With some fruit? Ah, yes the season for fresh fruit has not yet arrived here, I know I know. But dried figs, dates, apricots go a long way. Thanks!
I notice a new face in the corner, hacking away on what sounds very much like a venerable Model M keyboard. I smile. There can be only one: Mainframe system operator. He's running the world, they say. So I walk over:
Morning Sir! How was the night shift?
He nods, mumbles:
Well, so so ... not awfully bad, but no progress on that long running super job someone smuggled into the queue a few weeks back. Oh well. Over 99% busy, not bad, isn't it?
I look for ~bartender. He joined, already smiling at the clackety-clack sounding piece of technology :-)
~bartender? How about some real breakfast for the guy? Ya, whatever he likes. He runs the world! Did you know that? Maybe bacon and eggs, beans, high cholesterol and all the good stuff? Yeah? And to hell with the porridge, same for me, please.
~madqubit nods and smiles.
And coffee!
Cheers, mate! And welcome to the Midnight!
"Looks like I'm working late today, Only licensed 250MIPS. Guess I'll be getting some ZIIP power from the Sysprog."
Thank you! While I was typing that above I was waiting to hear back from some our DB2 analyst on a few tape backup abends.
Like this place already.
