Weird music

~detritus

A few times I've been told, about some or other music I was listening to, that it was 'weird'. That's an interesting compliment, one would say, a weird one :-)

It always puzzled me when somebody would say something like that. What makes music "weird"? Whenever someone has come and described some music as "weird", it immediately goes into my list of favorites. More weird music, more!

Sometimes I've felt the same thing, when listening to new music, it has come to my mind an understanding of what people may mean by that thought, as it comes to my mind: This music is weird! Even I don't know what it means, and I find myself somewhat amused to have this thought myself.

Just the other day I was listening to Kraftwerk. I have listened to them a thousand times before. The idea crossed my head as I imagined one of the people who occassionally come near my house. Workers usually bring their music, very standard music, the one that keeps playing on the radio, they rarely ever go beyond this. Kraftwerk would certainly seem weird to them!

I don't know if there is a lesson to be taken from this, just a thought I thought worth sharing. By the way, nobody seems to be using the jukebox, mind if I play some Kraftwerk?

~bartender more and more coffee, keep it coming!

"I program my home computer ; Beam myself into the future".

I have been listening to a few other krautrock bands as well like Can [like couple of their albums though not all, their vocals something nauseate me] and Faust [which is really weird, sometimes in a positive way ].

If Florian Schneider only knew the shitfest that programming would become, he might have not been so eager to beam himself into the future...

Krautrock, huh? I hadn't heard of it. When I mentioned "weird" music I was thinking mostly of more "traditional" kind of music, not the borderline concrete stuff like Faust or Cyborg Philarmonic. I'm not complaining, though, that kind of stuff is right up my alley :-)

Speaking of krautrock, and a lot closer to the style of Kraftwerk, yesterday I found Robert Schroeder, cool stuff. Just a little weird, not nearly enough to fit with the other recommendations floating in this thread.

I love Kraftwerk, but I've got some really weird music for you.

Las Sucias – Salte de Medio
Uma Parede de Ouvidos – Algorithms of Antipathy
Cyborg Philharmonic – Household Compliances

Cool. Thank you!

I liked Las Sucias, I like the name of their band, I thought it would end up being some kind of punk, like groups with names such as 'kagada de perro', a recent find.

Cyborg Philarmonic was good too. Sort of takes me back to russian научная фантастсика, probably a good soundtrack to read some of it!

Uma Parede de Ouvidos, sounds more like a nightmare than the other ones, and that's saying a lot, I can't imagine myself willingly listening to it.

Africa Bambaata LOVES Kraftwerk (Soul Sonic Force - Planet Rock).

I tried BreakDancing in my Youth, and my Favourite Electro-Funk-Track is "Willesden Dodgers - Jive Rythm Trax 122 bpm".

Also check for the "Knightz of Bass" from Mannheim, Germany ... !

Hey, bboy/girl music! cool!

I also tried breakdancing at some point in my tweens. I never really got far, but I still appreciate this music and it does take me back to those days. I especially liked that one with the kraftwerk sample in it.

Have a weird day!

oh man, kraftwerk! they end up in rotation quite often sometimes when i throw my collection into 'shuffle' mode. *Computer World* and *Radioactivity* are probably two of my favorites from them.

music, like all art, is one of those highly subjective things, something that i love someone else may find 'weird' (like you, i'm not sure on the meaning of this when it comes to music, as it certainly will sound 'not weird' to someone else). for instance, i've had music going before and someone would tell me it isn't to their taste. i know i was playing Boards of Canada one time and an old friend of mine thought it sounded weird.

of course, like you, every time i hear someone say the word 'weird' or 'unique' or some other similar term when it comes to tunes, it ends up on my radar. i've always been a huge fan of experimental music, which a lot of people will surely deem 'weird', but i can't get enough of it! give me all the 'weird' tunes you can find! :-)

~bartender, that coffee certainly smells good. mind pouring me a mug? and i will happily throw a few quarters down for those kraftwerk tunes to play on the jukebox, as well.

Wow, the band's inception was back in the early 1970s, and somehow I never heard of it?

Must have been some Russian Interference(tm) at werk.... :-)
