Is it on the uptick, though? I feel like the overwhelming majority of people are still just as tied to and dependent on the corporate spyware as they have been for the past 10 years.

you're right, 80, 90+ percent of people are (probably, I don't know) still using huge social media platforms, but the increase in Neocities, personal sites, self-hosted and independent "spots" online are enormous compared to 2017, and certainly 2010. 2018 saw the biggest "jump", and then COVID another increase, and in 2022 (for whatever reason) a fuckton of blogs came online.

people can (and in some cases, likely are) able to do both, though many have jumped shipped to no social media. Which is good.

I do think you're right, for the record. It has definitely increased dramatically. I would ask further, though: how many of these blogs and sites are live, and how many are long-abandoned? I know in Geminispace I stumble across dead blogs and broken rings with some frequency.
