Midnight Pub

Quicksilver Day, Leaden Night

~johano

Quicksilver day, leaden night

The minutes slip into hours

My silent prayer for greater insight

Wending its way to unseen powers

Earlier day was dappled golden-grey

The wind bent the trees from their places

The moments silently slipped quickly away

In the tumult, leaving no traces

Save for a cumulative strain

That grew with the dimming of light

A slow heaviness felt in the brain

Which yearns for relief in the night

May blessed calm succeed the storm

And every doubt let us defray

May powers that be work alchemy: transform

Leaden night to quicksilver day.

Heart: especially "Save for a cumulative strain". Definitely feel that: years of moments congealing in ways you wish they wouldn't - despite not being able to say for sure how you wish they would.

Yesterday afternoon we got home from some serious physical labor followed by several pints, and got into playing favorite songs through the performance amp - Linkin Park's "In The End" slithering its way into the mix....

Prynhawn da, ~inquiry, and diolch for liking the poem! I hear what you're saying about the moments congealing and you put it into words beautifully!

reply

Speaking of conceal... today's yard work formed a perfectly pasty amalgam of sweat, soil, and lawn chemicals.... >_<

Supposed to work on some trim (no.. not the best kind... <coughs>) at a rental, but ain't be much gas left in me bio tank - not that my wife will be much interested in what her hearing processing will no doubt re-translate into the stuff excuses are made of....

reply

johano

Hope today's trim was of a more pleasing variety hehe :)

In re uxoris: I think I mentioned before about the two theories of arguing with women?

reply

inquiry

Now there's a new word for me that I can get seriously behind... *provided* I get the proper permission/approval in advance, of course.... :-)

reply

johano

"in re uxoris", you mean? it's just Latin for "in the matter of the/a wife"...

reply

inquiry

My reply was based on seeing this upon searching for some meaning in the matter of the 'uxoris':

uxorious

ŭk-sôr′ē-əs, ŭg-zôr′-

adjective

- Excessively submissive or devoted to one's wife.

- Excessively fond of, or submissive to, a wife; being a dependent husband.

- Overly devoted or submissive to one's wife.

Needless to say (contender for the most pointless phrase on the internets..?), I didn't know whether to do more dishes or cut it off.... :-)

reply

johano

"Uxorious" does indeed stem from that root :)

reply

inquiry

It somehow seems fit in - I mean fitting! - to be erecting such meat - I mean meet! - verbal homage. ;-)

reply

johano

I see what you did there 😃😃 and oddly enough it reminds me of a joke about two gay Irishmen 😃😃

reply

inquiry

Well now you got me wondering if I know anyone that might be the butt of that joke.... ;-)

Probably repeating myself, but we were married by a gay Christian minister friend of ours - which oddly enough has my mind connecting the word 'Pentacost' to the phrase "pent up cost"....

<wonders what to do with the textural monkey wrench next>

reply

johano

So the joke goes: did you hear about the two Irish boyfriends? Their names are Michael Fitzpatrick and Patrick Fitzmichael 😃

And no you weren't repeating yourself with the anecdote about your wedding

reply

inquiry

My kind of joke!

reply

johano

Ti'n croeso 😃

reply

inquiry

My garsh, it's fun learning Welsh while drinking!

reply

johano

My Spanish gets better when I've had a Cuba Libre or two 😃

reply

inquiry

For me it's more in the direction of chancing upon a Jessica Alba photo - e.g. spontaneous emissions a la "On the lay! On the lay!" :-)

reply

johano

:) The funny thing is that "andale, andale!" isn't used in Spanish as much as you might think, and not in this context... spontaneous emissions might be accompanied by a heart-felt "ay Dios, ya vengo!"

I can believe childhood cartoon sessions might not have led to a completely accurate view of the world.

Whoa!

It's more fun to believe in cartoon physics though :D

I believe I'm within parameters here :D :D

Oh, gosh, what I wouldn't give to be seeing anvils falling from the sky on a more regular basis - complete with slowly developing thick enough scalp/skull to enjoy their impact!

I believe I'm within parameters here :D :D

Heh!

Also, what you said has me imagining Midnight Pub posts/replies as parameters we're unbeknownstly passing between hidden scripts....

reply

johano

Apparently one can post here via scripts, although I've not tried it yet

reply

inquiry

I wouldn't be surprised.

But experience tells me there'll be a loathsome security/authentication process to address that'll have me once again muttering to myself about how much I despise too much of humanity for the hoops they seemingly so love watching me jump through as their bullets well nigh grace my tootsies....

(Anyone else suddenly have the cereal "Fruit Loops" come to mind during the above whine-gasm?)

reply

johano

There is indeed some kerfuffle about copying a session token to make the script work, which is why I haven't bothered with it yet.

reply

inquiry

In software, if it's not one thing, it's 2^16 others.

(And of course the 'if' is actually a 'when'....)

reply

johano

More like 2^64 others 😃 and yes it's always when not if

reply

inquiry

I agree that it's always always. :-)

reply

johano

In an odd way, this reminds me of a short poem called a "grook" written by Piet Hein (have you heard of him?):

Two words

Express

My love

Galore:

Nevertheless

Everthemore.

reply

inquiry

I've not heard of Piet Hein.

But, of course, the 'Hein' is a danged good beginning to another surname....

reply

johano

Piet Hein was an interesting guy:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piet_Hein_(scientist)

And yes, I'm a Heinlein fan too...

reply

inquiry

Ah... I definitely recognize his photo at that URL. Must have investigated him in the path. I mean past. :-)

Wow, forgot about Heinlein, actually. I was initially thinking 'Heineken', but then I wrote 'surname', and although it's probably a surname, most would likely thinking of it more a brand name than a surname.

reply

johano

Speaking of people from the past, did you ever read much by Robert Anton Wilson?

reply

inquiry

Oh, man... he was a mainstay in the late 80's / early 90's for me. I haunted bookstores incessantly hoping they'd found more room for him in the section I too often felt all alone in....

I remember totally loving The Illuminatus! Trilogy, although of course I don't remember a lick of it now. I've moved several times since those days, so I'll have to dig around to see if it survived... remembering it as a thick, mostly red-colored soft-cover....

reply

johano

I think I've read just about everything he ever published, and it was indeed very formative... I'm pretty sure I have an omnibus edition of Illuminatus! around here somewhere...

reply

inquiry

Guard with with your wife! I mean (for me, anyway) life! :-)
